C\u2019est ce roman, revu par l\u2019auteur, que propose l\u2019excellent \u00e9diteur marseillais Le Tripode sous le titre \u00ab\u00a0<em>Moi, le glorieux<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"919\" src=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/BEL.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/BEL.jpg 623w, https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/BEL-203x300.jpg 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">     C\u2019est en fait entre 1988 et 1996 que furent publi\u00e9s ses &nbsp;trois vrais premiers livres, sous sa v\u00e9ritable identit\u00e9 de &nbsp;G\u00e9rard-Martial Princeau. Puis, \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on d\u2019un Fernando Pessoa jouant des masques, il avait opt\u00e9 pour deux h\u00e9t\u00e9ronymes. Anne-Marie S. pour un titre unique, \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>La Crue<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb (Editions Ph\u00e9bus), en 1999. Et donc Mathieu Belezi. C\u2019est sous ce dernier nom d\u2019auteur qu\u2019a vu le jour, entre 2008 et 2022, une t\u00e9tralogie romanesque que l\u2019on pourrait d\u00e9signer comme sa <em>somme alg\u00e9rienne<\/em>&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;<em><strong>C\u2019\u00e9tait notre terre<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em>\u00bb (2008), \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Les vieux fous<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb (2011), \u00ab<em>&nbsp;<strong>Un faux pas dans la vie d\u2019Emma Picard<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb 2015), \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Attaquer la terre et le soleil<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb (2022, prix du Livre Inter 2023). A chaque fois les 132 ann\u00e9es de la colonisation de l\u2019Alg\u00e9rie, entre 1830 et 1962, se trouvent \u00e9voqu\u00e9es. &nbsp;Soit de fa\u00e7on polyphonique, soit restitu\u00e9e par la voix d\u2019un unique protagoniste, soit encore par l\u2019entremise d\u2019un narrateur omniscient. La trag\u00e9die alg\u00e9rienne, depuis le pr\u00e9tendu \u00ab&nbsp;<em>\u00e2ge d\u2019or<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb de la conqu\u00eate jusqu\u2019aux ultimes soubresauts des attentats de l\u2019OAS, a trouv\u00e9 en l\u2019esp\u00e8ce la grande fresque \u00e0 sa hauteur. Par l\u2019inspiration, par le souffle, par la puissance de d\u00e9voilement.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Un r\u00e9cit all\u00e9gorique, dont la figure centrale incarne le colonialisme et ses 132 ann\u00e9es de pr\u00e9sence<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">     Dans \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Moi, le glorieux<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb un narrateur nomm\u00e9 Albert Vandel se tient au centre du r\u00e9cit. Peut-\u00eatre se souvient-on d\u2019un homonyme lointain, un certain Louis Vandell, auteur en 1859 d\u2019 \u00ab<em>&nbsp;<strong>Une ann\u00e9e dans le Sahel<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb&nbsp;? Il s\u2019agissait en fait, \u00e0 l\u2019instar de Mathieu Belezi pour \u00ab<em>&nbsp;<strong>Moi, le glorieux<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, d\u2019un pseudonyme&nbsp;: celui de l\u2019\u00e9crivain et peintre orientaliste Eug\u00e8ne Fromentin (1820-1876), premier narrateur de la conqu\u00eate et observateur sensible de ses d\u00e9g\u00e2ts. \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Moi, le glorieux<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb se pr\u00e9sente sous la forme d\u2019un r\u00e9cit all\u00e9gorique, dont la figure centrale incarne le colonialisme et ses 132 ann\u00e9es de pr\u00e9sence. Mathieu Belezi invente pour cela un personnage hors normes, ancien capitaine de l\u2019arm\u00e9e fran\u00e7aise, sorte de poussah ob\u00e8se en chaise roulante, retranch\u00e9 avec des hommes de main dans sa villa des Eucalyptus, sur les hauteurs d\u2019Alger. L\u2019homme, li\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019OAS qui met la ville \u00e0 feu et \u00e0 sang tandis que l\u2019Ind\u00e9pendance approche, s\u2019appelle donc Albert Vandel et s\u2019est lanc\u00e9 dans un d\u00e9lirant monologue, racontant la colonisation \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re, depuis les origines jusqu\u2019aux soubresauts ultimes. Son \u00e2ge l\u2019y autorise&nbsp;: \u00e0 145 ans, il se targue d\u2019\u00eatre \u00e0 la fois le \u00ab&nbsp;<em>premier et dernier colon d\u2019Alg\u00e9rie<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb. A son c\u00f4t\u00e9 se tient la jeune Ouhria, 15 ans, enlev\u00e9e au berceau lors d\u2019une exp\u00e9dition punitive et d\u00e9volue \u00e0 la satisfaction d\u2019absolument tous ses besoins. Elle \u00e9coute d\u2019une oreille apparemment distraite, mais certainement pas indiff\u00e9rente, la logorrh\u00e9e du \u00ab&nbsp;<em>vieux fou<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb&nbsp;: il est ici question de son peuple et de son pays. Par la bouche de Vandel s\u2019exprime la m\u00e9moire coloniale, dans sa crudit\u00e9 et sa brutalit\u00e9, dans sa fondamentale barbarie. &nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Si le romanesque donne ici \u00e0 plein, il stimule contin\u00fbment l\u2019intelligence historique<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">     Vandel \u00e9voque des \u00e9pisodes successifs de la conqu\u00eate, de la spoliation et de l\u2019asservissement des autochtones. A chaque fois, il se montre lui-m\u00eame en action, tel l\u2019\u00e9ternel colonial sous ses diff\u00e9rents visages. C\u2019est apr\u00e8s tout un seul et m\u00eame esprit qui, depuis 1830, dirige le comportement des colonisateurs&nbsp;: appropriation continuelle de nouveaux espaces, exploitation des ressources, mainmise sur l\u2019\u00e9conomie, exercice d\u2019un pouvoir sans limite. De cet ensemble de sc\u00e8nes, comme autant d\u2019images fortes de l\u2019aventure, se d\u00e9gage une v\u00e9ritable typologie de la colonisation. Alors m\u00eame qu\u2019il ne para\u00eet jamais s\u2019\u00e9loigner d\u2019un v\u00e9cu \u00e0 hauteur d\u2019homme, le r\u00e9cit de Vandel acc\u00e8de \u00e0 une dimension symbolique. La force d\u00e9tonante du roman de Mathieu Belezi tient pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment dans cet alliage d\u2019\u00e9paisseur et d\u2019abstraction. De ses tableaux satur\u00e9s de bruits, d\u2019odeurs, de chaleur, de sexe, de sanies et de sang monte la froide logique qui commande au bout du compte l\u2019entreprise initi\u00e9e par Bugeaud. Derri\u00e8re les \u00ab&nbsp;<em>colonnes infernales<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb qui conqui\u00e8rent le pays se tient l\u2019\u00ab&nbsp;<em>argent de la Banque d\u2019Alg\u00e9rie et du Cr\u00e9dit Lyonnais<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb. Si le romanesque donne ici \u00e0 plein, il stimule contin\u00fbment l\u2019intelligence historique. Le roman est magnifique par son art de la repr\u00e9sentation. Il est remarquable par ce qu\u2019il rappelle et met en perspective \u00e0 une plus vaste \u00e9chelle.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">     Dans l\u2019urgence, Vandel et une poign\u00e9e d\u2019autres repr\u00e9sentants du \u00ab&nbsp;<em>grand colonat<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb doivent maintenant fuir. Ils envisagent l\u2019Afrique du Sud et les \u00ab&nbsp;<em>terres b\u00e9nies de l\u2019apartheid<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb comme destination. Parce qu\u2019ils savent qu\u2019il faut attendre \u00ab&nbsp;<em>le pire<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb d\u2019un peuple sur le dos duquel on s\u2019est enrichi. La phrase revient \u00e0 plusieurs reprises dans le cours du r\u00e9cit. Si les \u00ab&nbsp;<em>vieux fous<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb semblent divaguer, ils n\u2019en ont pas moins une claire conscience de l\u2019enjeu. Pour leur classe, pour eux-m\u00eames, et m\u00eame pour les \u00eatres qu\u2019ils ont r\u00e9duits en esclavage. Telle la petite Ouhria. L\u2019\u00e9quip\u00e9e s\u2019arr\u00eatera brutalement \u00e0 Ouargla, au d\u00e9but du Sahara. Le \u00ab&nbsp;<em>peuple hostile<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb tant m\u00e9pris\u00e9, exploit\u00e9 &nbsp;et violent\u00e9, interceptera la petite troupe. Jusqu\u2019au bout Vandel s\u2019accrochera au mythe des bienfaits de 132 ann\u00e9es de colonisation, du \u00ab&nbsp;<em>travail admirable (\u2026) pour le bien-\u00eatre de l\u2019Alg\u00e9rie<\/em>.&nbsp;\u00bb Pour la foule, \u00ab&nbsp;<em>une histoire r\u00e9voltante<\/em>.&nbsp;\u00bb On peut sans peine deviner la suite, \u00e0 l\u2019exacte hauteur du d\u00e9ni de r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Ultime violence de ce r\u00e9cit satur\u00e9 de violences. D\u2019une beaut\u00e9 terrible et rare.
