Par sa th\u00e9matique et sa mani\u00e8re, comme par la richesse et la force de son ancrage culturel. Un jeune Allemand violoniste virtuose y tient une place centrale, alors que son pays, qui a r\u00e9pandu l\u2019horreur dans toute l\u2019Europe, doit maintenant affronter les bombardements massifs des Alli\u00e9s. La r\u00e9f\u00e9rence para\u00eetra peut-\u00eatre abusive, mais dans ce livre r\u00e9sonnent des tonalit\u00e9s qui ne sont pas sans rappeler les sublimes discordances d\u2019Oskar Matzerath dans \u00ab<em>\u00a0Le Tambour<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, le chef d\u2019\u0153uvre de G\u00fcnter Grass paru en 1959<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"469\" height=\"676\" src=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/HUHA.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1957\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/HUHA.jpg 469w, https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/HUHA-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cela commence un hiver dans la cit\u00e9 m\u00e9di\u00e9vale de Ratisbonne. Du pont sur le Danube aux for\u00eats environnantes, en passant par les tours de la cath\u00e9drale, partout s\u2019y respire un romantisme dont Hubert Haddad restitue les multiples manifestations et les enveloppements au milieu des bourrasques de neige. Une mani\u00e8re d\u2019Allemagne profonde et \u00e9ternelle surgit ainsi d\u2019une \u00e9blouissante succession d\u2019images. ETA Hoffmann et Novalis ne sont pas loin. Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que se fasse entendre, \u00e0 la toute fin du chapitre premier, venant d\u00e9chirer l\u2019envo\u00fbtant\u00a0 voile romantique, la voix d\u2019une \u00ab\u00a0<em>Chemise brune avin\u00e9e chantant heidi, heido, heida, ha, ha, ha<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0: dans la vieille m\u00e9tropole bavaroise comme dans le reste du pays le nazisme a op\u00e9r\u00e9 sa greffe. Dans une v\u00e9n\u00e9rable maison bourgeoise, de celle qu\u2019on voit sur les gravures de Matth\u00e4us Merian, un jeune gar\u00e7on vit seul avec sa m\u00e8re. Il se pr\u00e9nomme Clemens et semble poss\u00e9der toutes les caract\u00e9ristique physiques de certains h\u00e9ros des l\u00e9gendes germanique, depuis sa blondeur jusqu\u2019\u00e0 son profil d\u2019elfe. Il joue dans l\u2019arrangement de Franz Liszt \u00ab\u00a0<em><strong>Die Lorelei<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb, le grand po\u00e8me de Heinrich Heine, monument de la culture allemande impossible \u00e0 invisibiliser. Sauf que celui-ci appara\u00eet d\u00e9sormais \u00a0dans les livres assorti de la mention \u00ab\u00a0<em>unbekannter Dichter\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb (auteur inconnu). Hubert Haddad, qui cite le po\u00e8me dans son int\u00e9gralit\u00e9, ne cesse ainsi de tisser le lien entre un pass\u00e9 toujours vivace et ses pauvres avatars des ann\u00e9es 1930-1940. Clemens ne se s\u00e9pare jamais de son violon, comme Oskar Matzerath de son tambour. Il en joue pareillement en virtuose. Hubert Haddad brosse son portrait bouleversant, \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on des grands ma\u00eetres du romantisme. \u00ab<em>\u00a0<strong>La Symphonie atlantique<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u00bb se pr\u00e9sente d\u2019abord comme un roman d\u2019atmosph\u00e8re.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Entre roman de formation et roman historique, le livre avance, d\u00e9ployant d\u2019infinies beaut\u00e9s<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bient\u00f4t priv\u00e9 de sa fragile m\u00e8re (\u00ab\u00a0<em>ils pr\u00e9tendent que j\u2019ai besoin de soins<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0: le r\u00e9gime nazi ne peut laisser \u00e0 la vue de tous des \u00eatres enti\u00e8rement requis par leurs tourments intimes), Clemens, tout juste sept ans, \u00e9choue finalement dans une institution, le Burg Arduinna, sorte de r\u00e9plique de \u00ab\u00a0<strong><em>L\u2019Institut Benjamenta<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb de Robert Walser. Un lieu charg\u00e9 de myst\u00e8re, auquel le gar\u00e7on donne vie par l\u2019entremise de son violon. Un talent qui longtemps lui sert aussi de protection pour \u00e9chapper \u00e0 l\u2019enr\u00f4lement dans les Jeunesses hitl\u00e9riennes. L\u2019Allemagne, enfin vaincue et refoul\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019est, en est maintenant rendue au stade de son histoire, o\u00f9 tout \u00eatre physiquement apte, quel que soit son \u00e2ge, va devoir devenir chair \u00e0 canon. Entre roman de formation et roman historique, le livre avance, d\u00e9ployant d\u2019infinies beaut\u00e9s. On y apprend que le violon avait jadis appartenu \u00e0 un autre virtuose, le grand-p\u00e8re de Clemens, \u00ab\u00a0<em>gaz\u00e9 \u00e0 Verdun<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb Un canevas narratif serr\u00e9 se laisse apercevoir, auquel le livre doit son exceptionnelle densit\u00e9. A son tour le jeune gar\u00e7on doit rev\u00eatir l\u2019uniforme de la HJ. On le surnomme \u00ab\u00a0<em>le jeune Siegfried<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb Un nouvel institut l\u2019accueille, on y remarque \u00ab\u00a0<em>sa parfaite conformit\u00e9 \u00e0 la typologie aryenne<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb Depuis l\u2019hiver 1942, quelques mois avant le tournant de Stalingrad, l\u2019Allemagne n\u2019\u00e9tait plus territoire inviol\u00e9. Chaque nuit elle subissait les raids de la Royal Air Force. Une autre musique faite de stridences, d\u2019explosions et de fracas, symphonie de temps de guerre venue de l\u2019Atlantique.\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Le roman pourrait s\u2019arr\u00eater l\u00e0, dans un \u00e9pilogue de bruit et de fureur \u00e0 la hauteur de ces temps tourment\u00e9s<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avec son unit\u00e9 de la <em>Hitlerjugend<\/em>, \u00ab\u00a0<em>kamikazes de seize ans<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, \u00a0Clemens avait fait mouvement vers l\u2019ouest, o\u00f9 se jouait dor\u00e9navant l\u2019issue du conflit. On le retrouve \u00e0 la fin terr\u00e9 dans un trou sur le mur de l\u2019Atlantique, quelque part en Normandie, du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la pointe du Hoc, \u00a0\u00ab\u00a0<em>pour combattre le nouveau monde<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb Son violon ne l\u2019a pas quitt\u00e9. La nuit du 5 au 6 juin est en train de se dissiper. Le roman pourrait s\u2019arr\u00eater l\u00e0, dans un \u00e9pilogue de bruit et de fureur \u00e0 la hauteur de ces temps tourment\u00e9s. Mais Hubert Haddad lui ajoute quatre pages\u00a0proprement sublimes : une narratrice \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re personne, qui porte sur un avant-bras un matricule tatou\u00e9 \u00e0 Dachau, raconte le p\u00e8lerinage que depuis des ann\u00e9es elle vient faire vers la pointe du Hoc, au cimeti\u00e8re allemand de la Cambe, pour y d\u00e9poser un bouquet de fleurs sauvages sur la s\u00e9pulture de Clemens Oberndorf, qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 son \u00e9l\u00e8ve prodige \u00e0 Ratisbonne. Elle \u00e9tait alors \u00e9tudiante et habitait le m\u00eame immeuble. En quatre pages elle ramasse tout ce qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de dans le roman, apporte des \u00e9clairages, fournit des cl\u00e9s.
