C\u2019est ainsi que \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Le courage des innocents<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb, sa quinzi\u00e8me&nbsp; fiction romanesque, peut \u00eatre lue dans l\u2019ombre port\u00e9e de \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Bakhita<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb (2017) et du \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Gosse<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb (2022). A chaque fois des enfants voient leur vie gravement se disjoindre&nbsp;: l\u2019une, petite africaine au XIXe si\u00e8cle, est enlev\u00e9e par des n\u00e9griers et vendue sur un march\u00e9 aux esclaves avant de voir sa destin\u00e9e prendre un cours inattendu&nbsp;; l\u2019autre, gamin de Paris n\u00e9 apr\u00e8s la Grande guerre, se retrouve \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 8 ans \u00e0 l\u2019Assistance publique avant, l\u00e0 encore, un impressionnant infl\u00e9chissement de sa trajectoire &nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"472\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/VERO.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/VERO.jpg 472w, https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/VERO-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dans \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Le courage des innocents<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb V\u00e9ronique Olmi a opt\u00e9 pour la forme d\u2019un diptyque. L\u2019on y suit le parcours de Ben, vingt ans, militant altermondialiste d\u2019abord requis par le sauvetage de son demi-fr\u00e8re qui vient d\u2019\u00eatre plac\u00e9 en famille d\u2019accueil, &nbsp;puis engag\u00e9 dans un plus vaste combat qui va le conduite jusqu\u2019en Ukraine. Il se sent en effet une responsabilit\u00e9 par rapport \u00e0 Jimmy, demi-fr\u00e8re de treize ans plus jeune que lui. Leur m\u00e8re \u00e9tait morte trois ans auparavant et depuis lors il n\u2019avait plus eu de nouvelles du gar\u00e7on&nbsp;: le p\u00e8re alcoolique, qui&nbsp; avait perdu sa garde, refusait de passer ses appels.&nbsp; Ben n\u2019a d\u00e9sormais de cesse de retrouver et prendre sous son aile ce petit fr\u00e8re en si d\u00e9licate posture. Tandis que lui-m\u00eame vit d\u2019exp\u00e9dients et de petits boulots&nbsp;: sa vie est devenue celle des militants contre toutes les injustices, comme de ceux qu\u2019on retrouve sur les \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Zones \u00e0 d\u00e9fendre<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, mi-marginaux mi-d\u00e9tachement avanc\u00e9 du combat pour &nbsp;un futur vivable. Gu\u00e8re \u00e9loign\u00e9s, aux yeux de beaucoup, de ceux devant lesquels on s\u2019\u00e9carte \u00ab&nbsp;<em>parce qu\u2019ils puent, parce qu\u2019ils sont moches, parce qu\u2019ils partagent avec eux les virus les plus contagieux, parce qu\u2019ils sont ce que chacun appr\u00e9hende, l\u2019incarnation du cauchemar commun&nbsp;\u00bb. <\/em>La plume sensible de V\u00e9ronique Olmi fait ici merveille pour restituer ces itin\u00e9raires d\u00e9nu\u00e9s de &nbsp;perspectives dans un monde lui-m\u00eame d\u00e9sorient\u00e9 face aux d\u00e9rives de la mondialisation. Dans le sillage de Ben, c\u2019est la terrible cohorte des laiss\u00e9s-pour-compte et des r\u00e9prouv\u00e9s, dans une indiff\u00e9rence quasi g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, qui se donne ainsi \u00e0 voir. &nbsp;Parmi ceux-ci les enfants plac\u00e9s en familles d\u2019accueil. Le r\u00e9cit se resserre alors sur ces jeunes existences, en lesquelles Ben voit une proximit\u00e9 manifeste avec \u00ab&nbsp;<em>ceux de la marge et des bas-c\u00f4t\u00e9s (\u2026) du manque et de l\u2019infortune<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb. Dans cette premi\u00e8re partie se dessine le tableau g\u00e9n\u00e9ral d\u2019un monde en souffrance.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tr\u00e8s vite, dans la continuit\u00e9 de la premi\u00e8re partie, il est de nouveau question d\u2019enfants affront\u00e9s au malheur&nbsp;: les petits Ukrainiens des foyers et des orphelinats d\u00e9port\u00e9s en Russie<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Du temps a pass\u00e9, Jimmy a maintenant seize ans et Ben approche de la trentaine. La seconde partie du r\u00e9cit se pr\u00e9sente en apparente rupture, dans le temps comme dans la tonalit\u00e9 du propos, avec ce qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de. Sur ce qui s\u2019apparente \u00e0 un coup de t\u00eate, Ben, engag\u00e9 dans les rangs d\u2019une ONG, a saut\u00e9 \u00e0 la derni\u00e8re minute dans un car qui prenait la direction de Lviv&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Ils roulent vers la Belgique. Traversent le Luxembourg. Et puis l\u2019Allemagne. Ces pays aux fronti\u00e8res ouvertes, \u00e0 la prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 tranquille, bourgeoise, presque ironique<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, observe celle qui \u00e9crit, en saisissant pr\u00e9lude \u00e0 la rencontre avec un autre univers ainsi qu\u2019avec la guerre. Mais tr\u00e8s vite, dans la continuit\u00e9 de la premi\u00e8re partie, il est de nouveau question d\u2019enfants affront\u00e9s au malheur&nbsp;: les petits Ukrainiens des foyers et des orphelinats d\u00e9port\u00e9s en Russie. Ce qui avait pris les allures d\u2019un roman social accusateur se transmue en un haletant roman d\u2019action au c\u0153ur des p\u00e9rils d\u2019un pays sous la menace. Une r\u00e9sistance s\u2019est organis\u00e9e pour exfiltrer les enfants les plus menac\u00e9s. Ben, fid\u00e8le \u00e0 lui-m\u00eame, s\u2019engage bient\u00f4t dans ce nouveau combat. V\u00e9ronique Olmi restitue dans le d\u00e9tail le quotidien angoissant des enfants et de ceux qui en ont la charge. Une succession de sc\u00e8nes bouleversantes, souvent irrespirables. Mais aussi de fugitifs moments de gr\u00e2ce. Ben les raconte sur WhatsApp \u00e0 son fr\u00e8re et \u00e0 celle qui est devenue son amie, Anna, rest\u00e9s tous deux en France. Lui-m\u00eame, prenant tous les risques, va aller au bout de son engagement. Une sc\u00e8ne finale, face \u00e0 des troupiers russes qui l\u2019ont captur\u00e9, le montre choisissant d\u2019aller chercher la palme du martyr&nbsp;plut\u00f4t que d\u2019abjurer ce pour quoi il n\u2019avait depuis toujours jamais cess\u00e9 de lutter : \u00ab&nbsp;<em>La mort venait \u00e0 lui. La mort \u00e9tait en lui, pr\u00eate \u00e0 \u00e9clater<\/em>.&nbsp;\u00bb Un final \u00e0 la fois superbe et r\u00e9voltant, par la gr\u00e2ce de cette \u00e9criture qui tant\u00f4t se d\u00e9ploie dans toute sa richesse et tant\u00f4t choisit l\u2019\u00e9conomie de moyen de la litote.
