On sait l\u2019attachement que lui porte l\u2019autrice, par ailleurs \u00e9ditrice, critique et jur\u00e9e litt\u00e9raire, qui en 2014 nous donna un remarquable \u00ab<em>&nbsp;William Blake ou l\u2019infini<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb (Albin Michel). &nbsp;Le fil d\u2019or dont il est ici question, c\u2019est celui qui <em>a posteriori<\/em> se donne \u00e0 imaginer, traversant les \u00e2ges successifs d\u2019une vie pour leur donner sens et les inscrire dans une coh\u00e9rence<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"546\" height=\"811\" src=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/CRI.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2043\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/CRI.jpg 546w, https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/CRI-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">En 1989 Christine Jordis faisait para\u00eetre son premier livre, un essai, \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>De petits enfers vari\u00e9s, Romanci\u00e8res anglaises contemporaines<\/em><\/strong>.&nbsp;\u00bb Trente-cinq ann\u00e9es et vingt titres plus loin &#8211; essais, romans, r\u00e9cits &#8211; elle expose ce qui lui appara\u00eet d\u00e9sormais \u00eatre advenu sous le signe d\u2019une rigoureuse continuit\u00e9. Comme si le lien cach\u00e9 \u00e9tait devenu perceptible. Dans \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Le fil d\u2019or<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb le d\u00e9filement d\u2019une vie se donne en effet \u00e0 voir dans la totalit\u00e9 de ses dimensions. Une lecture \u00e0 la fois passionnante et \u00e9clairante&nbsp;: mani\u00e8re d\u2019autobiographie intellectuelle en m\u00eame temps que travers\u00e9e de la litt\u00e9rature anglaise par l\u2019une de ses toutes meilleures sp\u00e9cialistes. A ceci pr\u00e8s que Christine Jordis est \u00e9galement romanci\u00e8re, et non des moindres. Car ce qui frappe d\u2019abord au long de ces 256 pages, c\u2019est l\u2019absence de toute s\u00e9cheresse acad\u00e9mique, quand le discours th\u00e9orique tend \u00e0 prendre le pas sur le rendu de l\u2019\u00e9paisseur vivante des textes. C\u2019est l\u2019exact &nbsp;contraire qui se produit ici. Si tout avait forc\u00e9ment commenc\u00e9 par des lectures, celles-ci tourn\u00e8rent tr\u00e8s vite \u00e0 une confrontation quasiment physique avec des univers aussi dissemblables que ceux des livres qui faisaient l\u2019admiration de la future \u00e9crivaine&nbsp;: d\u2019Emily Bront\u00eb, de Kathleen Raine, de Virginia Woolf &nbsp;ou encore de David Gascoyne. Respectivement sur les landes du Yorkshire, dans un appartement de Paultons Square, dans le quartier de Bloomsbury, sur l\u2019\u00eele de Wight. &nbsp;Il n\u2019est certainement &nbsp;pas insignifiant que \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Le fil d\u2019or<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb soit sous-titr\u00e9 \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Rencontres et lectures anglaises<\/em><\/strong>.&nbsp;\u00bb Ce qu\u2019explicite tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t dans le livre la romanci\u00e8re&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;<em>M\u2019int\u00e9ressait surtout ce r\u00e9seau de fils souterrains qui se tissent dans un rapport, quel qu\u2019il soit, plus dense encore quand il est fait d\u2019affinit\u00e9s et d\u2019amiti\u00e9 \u2013 le sentiment qui m\u2019avait autrefois li\u00e9e \u00e0 ces figures aujourd\u2019hui disparues<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb. L\u2019on ne saurait mieux circonscrire la double vis\u00e9e du projet, \u00e0 la fois litt\u00e9raire et autobiographique (\u00ab&nbsp;<em>Le portrait de mes amis sera aussi le mien<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb).<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Chez Christine Jordis le lien ne rel\u00e8ve pas que de l\u2019admiration, de l\u2019enchantement et du partage, il est constitutif d\u2019un v\u00e9ritable v\u00e9cu commun<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;Cela avait commenc\u00e9 pour elle vers l\u2019\u00e2ge de dix ans. L\u2019on a appris dans d\u2019autres livres combien l\u2019enfance et l&rsquo;adolescence furent pour elle de rudes p\u00e9riodes. Pendant les vacances d\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9, quelque part en Touraine, elle avait ainsi accoutum\u00e9 de passer ses journ\u00e9es seule, \u00e0 d\u00e9ambuler au hasard dans une lande \u00e0 proximit\u00e9. Mais sa solitude \u00e9tait toute relative, dans la mesure o\u00f9 elle se sentait litt\u00e9ralement accompagn\u00e9e, pour ne pas dire escort\u00e9e, par deux figures famili\u00e8res, elles aussi habitu\u00e9es d\u2019une lande, qui marchaient \u00e0 son c\u00f4t\u00e9&nbsp;: Emily et Charlotte Bront\u00eb. Il n\u2019en ira pas autrement plus tard, quand par exemple elle parcourra le Londres de Virginia Woolf. Chez Christine Jordis le lien ne rel\u00e8ve pas que de l\u2019admiration, de l\u2019enchantement et du partage, mais il est constitutif d\u2019un v\u00e9ritable v\u00e9cu commun. Il en r\u00e9sulte des pages admirables de p\u00e9n\u00e9tration et de d\u00e9licatesse. Et cette fa\u00e7on de profession de foi&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;<em>A l\u2019universit\u00e9, inscrite en licence d\u2019anglais, j\u2019ai \u00e9vit\u00e9 soigneusement les cours o\u00f9 le roman d\u2019Emily serait \u00e9tudi\u00e9, craignant une dissection savante qui le priverait de son secret<\/em>.&nbsp;\u00bb On se rappelle Brecht, citant cette \u00e9tudiante de Leipzig qui avait absolument tout analys\u00e9 de son \u0153uvre, mais \u00e0 aucun moment n\u2019avait song\u00e9 \u00e0 en \u00e9voquer la couleur et la saveur.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Quelque chose comme un r\u00e9seau d\u2019affinit\u00e9s \u00e9lectives fondant une v\u00e9ritable famille d&rsquo;esprit<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ensuite il y avait eu les nombreux s\u00e9jours en Angleterre, les quelques ann\u00e9es d\u2019enseignement dans un coll\u00e8ge de la r\u00e9gion parisienne, puis l\u2019aventure du British Council \u00e0 Paris, qui apporta \u00e0 son regard un nouvel \u00e9largissement. Avec le recul, Christine Jordis est aujourd\u2019hui frapp\u00e9e par une \u00e9vidence&nbsp;: entre toutes les figures, qui non seulement ont contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la richesse de sa culture mais ont \u00e9galement particip\u00e9 \u00e0 sa propre affirmation, dont les \u0153uvres ont r\u00e9sonn\u00e9 en elle,&nbsp; l\u2019on peut postuler quelque chose comme un r\u00e9seau d\u2019affinit\u00e9s \u00e9lectives fondant une v\u00e9ritable \u00ab&nbsp;<em>famille d\u2019esprit<\/em>.&nbsp;\u00bb De m\u00eame que des lieux leur sont pour elle \u00e0 tout jamais attach\u00e9s. Davantage que des toponymes ou des localisations, des sensations, des images, voire leurs repr\u00e9sentations dans des images ou des tableaux. Dans \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Le fil d\u2019or<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb un foisonnant paysage litt\u00e9raire, fait de pass\u00e9 et de pr\u00e9sent, extraordinairement fouill\u00e9 et vivant, se donne &nbsp;\u00e0 voir. Cependant qu\u2019un autoportrait de plus en plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment se dessine et que s\u2019affiche le lent cheminement vers l\u2019\u00e9criture. En fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 au choix premier, la pulsation de l\u2019\u0153uvre avant la th\u00e9orie, ce livre de savoir et de culture vibre d\u2019une constante \u00e9motion.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Le regard lucide qu\u2019elle s\u2019est forg\u00e9 au contact d\u2019esprits d\u2019une implacable exigence<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">C\u2019est que \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Le fil d\u2019or&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb ne s\u2019\u00e9crit pas en dehors de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Christine Jordis, habit\u00e9e par sa constellation d\u2019\u00e9crivains anglais, s\u2019appuie en effet sur leur lecture pour scruter notre temps. Elle porte sur les modes et les tropismes de celui-ci le regard lucide qu\u2019elle s\u2019est forg\u00e9 au contact d\u2019esprits d\u2019une implacable exigence. En particulier contre le mat\u00e9rialisme trivial de notre \u00ab&nbsp;<em>\u00e2ge obscur<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, contre le nihilisme et sa \u00ab&nbsp;<em>vague d\u00e9ferlante<\/em>.\u00bb Chez Christine Jordis l\u2019engagement de l\u2019\u00e9crivaine et de l\u2019intellectuelle ne se laisse assur\u00e9ment pas mesurer \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sence sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux. Pas davantage \u00e0 quelque suivisme. Son ind\u00e9pendance de pens\u00e9e, sa libert\u00e9 de ton, elle les doit \u00e0 ses lectures, \u00e0 sa fr\u00e9quentation assidue des grands auteurs comme aux \u00ab&nbsp;<em>rencontres<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb qui ont jalonn\u00e9 son existence.
