Il y vit seul, \u00ab&nbsp;<em>dans son bric-\u00e0-brac de pens\u00e9es<\/em>.\u00bb Apr\u00e8s la disparition de sa m\u00e8re Augustine, apparemment d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e d\u2019une curieuse morsure animale au cou, il a emport\u00e9 hors de leur maison, pour en faire don \u00e0 la ressourcerie voisine, tout ce qui ne relevait pas pour lui du strict n\u00e9cessaire, autrement dit pas grand chose. Il vit dans un d\u00e9nuement choisi. Quant au monde alentour, il n\u2019est pour lui que d\u00e9sordre, effroi et menace. Avec l\u2019enlisement de l\u2019hiver, les animaux parqu\u00e9s en attente de l\u2019abattoir, le gibier traqu\u00e9 par les chasseurs. La plupart du temps il se terre donc chez lui, \u00e9crit ce qui lui passe par la t\u00eate, dans un permanent d\u00e9sordre. Comme les remont\u00e9es de souvenirs de sa tr\u00e9pidante existence d\u2019autrefois ou les moments d\u2019abandon dans les bras de sa m\u00e8re. Parfois un voisin de passage vient taper au carreau de la fen\u00eatre, mani\u00e8re de v\u00e9rifier qu\u2019il est toujours de ce monde. Un autre lui donne des \u0153ufs pour son unique repas de la journ\u00e9e. Ou bien une marginale \u00e0 son image vient chercher aupr\u00e8s de lui un peu de chaleur humaine avant de retourner le matin \u00e0 une autre fa\u00e7on de solitude. C\u2019est que J\u00e9r\u00f4me, ainsi que l\u2019\u00e9nonce clairement le titre du roman, vit \u00ab&nbsp;<em>tout au bord<\/em>.&nbsp;\u00bb &nbsp;En quelques pages Clotilde Escalle trace &nbsp;le p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre d\u2019un univers racorni.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Une dur\u00e9e \u00e9tale, sans hier ni demain, dans laquelle lui-m\u00eame se voit tel un autre<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quand, \u00e0 ce qu\u2019on d\u00e9signe comme la belle saison, J\u00e9r\u00f4me sort de son antre, c\u2019est pour s\u2019\u00e9tonner de la vastitude qui l\u2019entoure&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Une immensit\u00e9 se d\u00e9couvre pas moments \u00e0 ceux qui regardent longtemps<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, note celle qui tient r\u00e9cit de cette d\u00e9sh\u00e9rence en une phrase superbement \u00e9vocatrice. J\u00e9r\u00f4me est un contemplatif. Dans son champ de vision s\u2019inscrivent indiff\u00e9remment \u00eatres et objets. La ressourcerie en constitue le lieu de rencontre privil\u00e9gi\u00e9. Fa\u00e7on de spectacle dont il serait l\u2019acteur passif, d\u00e9sormais d\u00e9tach\u00e9 du temps qui passe&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;<em>il ne sait rien faire d\u2019autre qu\u2019\u00e9num\u00e9rer ce qu\u2019il voit et tenter d\u2019y croire<\/em>.&nbsp;\u00bb Clotilde Escalle restitue \u00e0 merveille sa sensation d\u2019\u00eatre devenu ce spectateur d\u2019une dur\u00e9e \u00e9tale, sans hier ni demain, dans laquelle lui-m\u00eame se voit tel un autre. On pense \u00e0 l\u2019affirmation c\u00e9l\u00e8bre de Rimbaud. Des sc\u00e8nes du pass\u00e9 aupr\u00e8s de sa m\u00e8re cependant ne cessent de l\u2019assaillir en une obs\u00e9dante omnipr\u00e9sence. Tandis que dans le ciel au-dessus de sa campagne vrombissent les a\u00e9ronefs de l\u2019arm\u00e9e de l\u2019air&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Et quels sont ces avions de chasse qui sifflent au-dessus de nos t\u00eates\u2026<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, interrogation racinienne pr\u00eat\u00e9e \u00e0 celui qui un jour fit des \u00e9tudes de lettres et du th\u00e9\u00e2tre. On mesure ici tout ce qui vient \u00e0 converger dans cet esprit inquiet. Tout ce qu\u2019il ne cesse de noter sur des bouts de papier \u00e9pars. Ses phrases invariablement s\u2019y terminent pas un \u00ab&nbsp;<em>etc<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, trahissant son renoncement \u00e0 appr\u00e9hender la multiplicit\u00e9 de ce qui se pr\u00e9sente \u00e0 lui.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>La langue et ses images loin au-del\u00e0 des usages ordinaires<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Il ne faut pas s\u2019y tromper, le texte de Clotilde Escalle s\u2019inscrit parmi les \u0153uvres qui poussent la langue et ses images loin au-del\u00e0 des usages ordinaires. Paradoxalement, alors que le personnage central s\u2019affiche \u00ab&nbsp;<em>tout au bord<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, le roman d\u00e9livre une repr\u00e9sentation extraordinairement riche de l\u2019univers duquel il pr\u00e9tend s\u2019abstraire. Il y est question de tourisme et d\u2019art, de jeunesse et de maisons de retraite (<em>pour ceux qui ont du vent dans la t\u00eate et des poches \u00e0 pipi<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb), de th\u00e9\u00e2tre et d\u2019amour, de po\u00e9sie (\u00ab&nbsp;<em>il ramasse d\u00e9sormais de la couleur dans les champs et au bord des foss\u00e9s<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb) et de religion, d\u2019\u00e9cologie et de consommation, de spiritualit\u00e9 et de sectes\u2026 &nbsp;Rarement solitaire n\u2019aura tant re\u00e7u de signaux du monde et de son temps.
