L\u2019\u00e9crivain n\u00e9 en 1975 vient de faire para\u00eetre, chez le m\u00eame \u00e9diteur par la m\u00eame traductrice, son seizi\u00e8me livre : \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Jeux de lumi\u00e8re&nbsp;<\/em>\u00bb, sa derni\u00e8re exofiction, revisite l\u2019histoire en jouant&nbsp; de l\u2019invention litt\u00e9raire. Le grand cin\u00e9aste expressionniste autrichien Georg Wilhelm Pabst y tient le r\u00f4le central<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/KEHLMANN-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/KEHLMANN-1.png 350w, https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/KEHLMANN-1-185x300.png 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Daniel Kehlmann centre son r\u00e9cit sur une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es de la vie de Pabst, qui furent aussi les plus controvers\u00e9es de son itin\u00e9raire. Le r\u00e9alisateur n\u00e9 en 1885 \u00e9tait au sommet de sa gloire lorsque les nazis acc\u00e9d\u00e8rent au pouvoir en 1933. \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>La rue sans joie<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb, avec Greta Garbo en 1925, et \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Loulou<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb, avec Louise Brooks en 1929, s\u2019\u00e9taient impos\u00e9s comme deux chefs d\u2019\u0153uvre du cin\u00e9ma expressionniste. Avec la fin du muet Pabst avait gagn\u00e9 Hollywood, o\u00f9 il tentait non sans difficult\u00e9s de donner un nouveau souffle \u00e0 sa carri\u00e8re. C\u2019est d\u2019abord un certain Franzl qui prend la parole, pour raconter comment un taxi est venu le chercher au <em>Repos du soir<\/em>, la maison de retraite viennoise o\u00f9 il passe ses vieux jours. La premi\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie du XXI\u00e8me si\u00e8cle s\u2019ach\u00e8ve. La TV autrichienne \u00d6RF consacre une \u00e9mission dominicale au g\u00e9nie cin\u00e9matographique disparu en 1967. Franzl, qui fut lui-m\u00eame r\u00e9alisateur de trois \u0153uvres mineures avec des vedettes du temps, est invit\u00e9 \u00e0 t\u00e9moigner en direct. Mais sa m\u00e9moire d\u00e9faille quelque peu, il sort du cadre de l\u2019interview. Sur le plateau on panique. Le premier chapitre de \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Jeux de lumi\u00e8re<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb est irr\u00e9sistible de dr\u00f4lerie et de causticit\u00e9. Du grand Daniel Kehlmann. On retrouvera Franzl, personnage de fiction qui sera maintenant dot\u00e9 d\u2019un nom de famille, Wilzek, \u00e0 la toute fin du roman pour une nouvelle sc\u00e8ne d\u2019anthologie. Entretemps l\u2019on aura suivi le parcours m\u00e9andreux de G.W. Pabst entre 1933 et 1945.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Pabst, pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 pourtant d\u2019une r\u00e9putation de cin\u00e9aste \u00ab&nbsp;rouge&nbsp;\u00bb,  s\u2019accommodera sans trop de difficult\u00e9 de la cohabitation avec les nouvelles autorit\u00e9s<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Au moment de l\u2019accession d&rsquo;Hitler au pouvoir Pabst tourne en France. On le retrouve ensuite \u00e0 Hollywood avant qu\u2019en 1938, r\u00e9pondant dans le roman \u00e0 un appel\u00a0 au secours de sa m\u00e8re, il regagne l\u2019Autriche annex\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019Allemagne depuis l\u2019Anschluss. Daniel Kehlmann excelle dans les constants fondus-encha\u00een\u00e9s entre les faits av\u00e9r\u00e9s et les purs produits de son invention. \u00a0Il attribue ainsi, autre exemple, au couple Gregor Wilhelm et Gertrude Pabst, elle-m\u00eame sc\u00e9nariste, un fils, Jakob, qui incarne les fourvoiements d\u2019une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Membre des Jeunesses hitl\u00e9riennes, soldat z\u00e9l\u00e9 de la Wehrmacht. Celui-ci dispara\u00eetra quelque part sur le front en m\u00eame temps que le Troisi\u00e8me Reich s\u2019effondrera. Quant \u00e0 Pabst lui-m\u00eame, pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 pourtant d\u2019une r\u00e9putation de cin\u00e9aste \u00ab\u00a0rouge\u00a0\u00bb, il s\u2019accommodera sans trop de difficult\u00e9 de la cohabitation avec les nouvelles autorit\u00e9s. L\u2019une des grandes sc\u00e8nes du livre le montre dans le bureau de \u00a0Goebbels, ministre de la propagande <em>naturellement<\/em> en charge de la culture. Daniel Kehlmann, dans une page \u00e0 la limite du fantastique, rend litt\u00e9ralement tangible la mani\u00e8re de schizophr\u00e9nie dans laquelle vit d\u00e9sormais le cin\u00e9aste, \u00e0 travers l\u2019alt\u00e9ration de sa vision et de sa perception des lieux\u00a0: apr\u00e8s avoir pris cong\u00e9, \u00ab\u00a0<em>il se trouvait au plafond et marchait la t\u00eate en bas<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb Dans le m\u00eame ordre d\u2019id\u00e9e, on peut voir comment il v\u00e9cut comme une conflictualit\u00e9, dans un permanent malaise, sa collaboration forc\u00e9e pour un film avec Leni Riefenstahl, la r\u00e9alisatrice des \u00ab\u00a0<strong><em>Dieux du stade<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb sur les Jeux Olympiques de 1936 \u00e0 Berlin, qui \u00e9tait devenue l\u2019\u00e9g\u00e9rie du r\u00e9gime nazi.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Le formidable effet de r\u00e9alit\u00e9 de son entreprise romanesque<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La riche documentation de Daniel Kehlmann, parfois juste un peu trop foisonnante, contribue \u00e0 produire le formidable effet de r\u00e9alit\u00e9 de son entreprise romanesque. Elle fait aussi remonter des \u00e9pisodes atroces de l\u2019histoire du cin\u00e9ma allemand. Quand l\u2019\u00e9crivain \u00e9voque le dernier tournage de Pabst, \u00e0 Prague en 1945, il s\u2019attache aux centaines de figurants d\u2019une maigreur anormale, dont le cin\u00e9aste para\u00eet ignorer la provenance. R\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e9vidente \u00e0 \u00ab&nbsp;<strong>Tiefland<\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb, dans lequel Leni Riefenstahl avait utilis\u00e9 des dizaines de d\u00e9port\u00e9s qui furent ensuite liquid\u00e9s \u00e0 Auschwitz. La question est ici pos\u00e9e de la responsabilit\u00e9 de l\u2019artiste face \u00e0 l\u2019Histoire, de ses silences complices au nom de l\u2019art. Daniel Kehlmann restitue en effet un personnage obsessionnellement requis par ses cr\u00e9ations, quasiment atteint de c\u00e9cit\u00e9 et de surdit\u00e9 face aux pires signaux du monde.
