Sans conteste l\u2019un des tr\u00e8s grands romans sur les ann\u00e9es qui pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e8rent ce que les Allemands d\u00e9signent comme \u00ab&nbsp;<em>die Wende<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb, le tournant du 9 novembre 1989<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Kairos-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Kairos-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/jclebrun.eu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Kairos.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le <em>Kairos<\/em> chez les Grecs anciens, c\u2019est l\u2019instant propice. Pour Katharina et Hans, ce fut leur rencontre dans un tramway berlinois du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la mythique Alexanderplatz, le 11 juillet 1986. Le d\u00e9but d\u2019une histoire qui se r\u00e9v\u00e8le \u00e9pouser \u00e9troitement celle de leur pays, la R\u00e9publique D\u00e9mocratique Allemande. A eux deux, ils en incarnent en effet les singularit\u00e9s, entre espoirs et turpitudes. Sans doute \u00e0 cause de leur diff\u00e9rence d\u2019\u00e2ge. Elle a 19 ans, est encore \u00e9tudiante. Il en a 54, est d\u00e9j\u00e0 un \u00e9crivain \u00e9tabli. Autant dire que l\u2019une n\u2019a connu comme horizon politique que la r\u00e9publique populaire fond\u00e9e en octobre 1949, quand l\u2019autre avait pass\u00e9 son enfance et le d\u00e9but de son adolescence sous le nazisme. Comme des millions d\u2019autres de son \u00e2ge il avait cru vivre une vie normale dans un pays normal. Il avait port\u00e9 la tenue des Jeunesses hitl\u00e9riennes, pour lui une mani\u00e8re de scoutisme. Rappelant en cela ce qu\u2019\u00e9crivait dans \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Trame d\u2019enfance<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb Christa Wolf, la grande romanci\u00e8re de la RDA&nbsp;: ces ann\u00e9es avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 pour elle celles des d\u00e9couvertes, des plaisirs collectifs et des premiers \u00e9mois. Il lui avait fallu plus tard tomber par hasard au bord d\u2019une route sur des hommes squelettiques en pyjamas ray\u00e9s pour soudain avoir la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation de ce qu\u2019avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 ces <em>belles<\/em> ann\u00e9es. Jenny Erpenbeck fait d\u2019ailleurs passer Christa Wolf dans son roman. Comme elle donne \u00e0 voir, en une succession de passionnantes apparitions, la plupart de celles et ceux qui donn\u00e8rent \u00e0 la litt\u00e9rature est-allemande, r\u00e9unis dans l\u2019Union des \u00e9crivains, ses lettres de noblesse et lui permirent d\u2019acc\u00e9der \u00e0 une audience internationale. Rien de surprenant \u00e0 cela&nbsp;: Hans est lui-m\u00eame un \u00e9crivain de la RDA, et non des moindres.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>L\u2019on d\u00e9couvre le Berlin-Est de la fin des ann\u00e9es 1980, dont Jenny Erpenbeck propose un fascinant relev\u00e9 urbanistique<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">En ce jour de l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 1986 le <em>Kairos<\/em> avait donc op\u00e9r\u00e9. Katharina se rappelle ce moment de gr\u00e2ce, alors qu\u2019elle vit depuis quatre mois aux Etats Unis, \u00e0 Pittsburgh, et qu\u2019elle vient d\u2019apprendre la mort de Hans. Leur histoire s\u2019\u00e9tait en effet peu \u00e0 peu d\u00e9lit\u00e9e comme s\u2019\u00e9tait lentement d\u00e9sagr\u00e9g\u00e9 leur pays jusqu\u2019au 9 novembre. Dans deux cartons emport\u00e9s aux USA une correspondance fournie, mais aussi des listes de courses, des feuilles d\u2019arbres &nbsp;et d\u2019autres petits souvenirs pr\u00e9cieusement conserv\u00e9s &nbsp;portent t\u00e9moignage d\u2019une &nbsp;folle passion et de ce qui la d\u00e9truisit. De ce que fut leur pays et de ce qui signa sa fin. Les plus anciens datent de 1986, les plus r\u00e9cents de 1992. Le roman de Jenny Erpenbeck s\u2019articule en deux parties, dont la mati\u00e8re est fournie par le contenu de ces cartons. Un \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Intermezzo<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb d\u2019une page les s\u00e9pare. Tel un entracte entre les deux faces de leur relation amoureuse. Ce qui s\u2019y donne \u00e0 observer, c\u2019est d\u2019abord un prodigieux coup de foudre, l\u2019une de ces rares \u00e9vidences qui s\u2019imposent au cours d\u2019une vie&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Les choses s\u2019\u00e9taient faites comme elle devaient se faire<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb dit sobrement celle qui raconte. Entre l\u2019\u00e9tudiante et l\u2019homme mari\u00e9, de trente-quatre ans son a\u00een\u00e9, p\u00e8re d\u2019un adolescent, une aventure passionn\u00e9e advient. A chaque fois que le couple se retrouve, il parcourt les rues de la ville, passe par les m\u00eames lieux, fr\u00e9quente les m\u00eames \u00e9tablissements, en suivant les impulsions de ce qui ressemble \u00e0 une v\u00e9ritable g\u00e9ographie amoureuse. L\u2019on y d\u00e9couvre le Berlin-Est de la fin des ann\u00e9es 1980, dont Jenny Erpenbeck propose un fascinant relev\u00e9 urbanistique, avec le mur en omnipr\u00e9sent arri\u00e8re-plan. \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Kairos<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb s\u2019inscrit incontestablement dans le lignage des tr\u00e8s grands textes sur Berlin, depuis \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Berlin Alexanderplatz<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb d\u2019Alfred D\u00f6blin jusqu\u2019au plus r\u00e9cent \u00ab&nbsp;<strong><em>Stern 111<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;\u00bb le Lutz Seiler.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dans des pages gla\u00e7antes Jenny Erpenbeck observe le couple en train de se d\u00e9faire, alors que le pays suit une pente identique<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ce qu\u2019on y voit aussi, c\u2019est un univers sur le point de dispara\u00eetre, celui d\u2019un monde culturel et artistique valoris\u00e9 par le pouvoir, en m\u00eame temps que plac\u00e9 sous \u00e9troite surveillance. Ce qui se joue entre Katharina et Hans rel\u00e8ve &nbsp;\u00e0 leur petite \u00e9chelle de cette mani\u00e8re de perversit\u00e9 et d\u2019emprise. Apr\u00e8s des mois de bonheur intense, le poison du soup\u00e7on commence de germer dans l\u2019esprit de Hans. Il avait d\u2019abord plac\u00e9 Katharina sur un pi\u00e9destal, il la met maintenant \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9preuve et exige des t\u00e9moignages de son attachement. Allant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 user des m\u00eames m\u00e9thodes que les enqu\u00eateurs de la Stasi, il oblige son amante \u00e0 r\u00e9diger sa biographie afin d\u2019y d\u00e9celer des \u00e9pisodes potentiellement douteux. Dans des pages gla\u00e7antes Jenny Erpenbeck observe le couple en train de se d\u00e9faire, alors que le pays, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 comme un \u00ab&nbsp;<em>vieil Etat fatigu\u00e9<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb malgr\u00e9 sa relative jeunesse, suit une pente identique. La grande force du roman tient non seulement dans l\u2019extraordinaire&nbsp; parall\u00e9lisme entre l\u2019intime et l\u2019universel, mais \u00e9galement dans son aisance \u00e0 restituer ce moment particulier de l\u2019histoire allemande que furent les quatre d\u00e9cennies d\u2019existence de la RDA. Avec la d\u00e9couverte finale qu\u2019effectue Katharina, qui \u00e9l\u00e8ve Hans au rang d\u2019incarnation de ce temps compliqu\u00e9. Jenny Erpenbeck le fait aujourd\u2019hui reposer non loin de Brecht et d\u2019Eisler, dans le m\u00eame cimeti\u00e8re berlinois.
